Facts and Info: Barbara Bush was born on June 8, 1925 in New York. Her parents were Marvin Pierce & Pauline Robinson Pierce. Her wealthy father was  President of McCall [Publishing] Corporation. Barbara enjoyed a privileged upbringing and was well educated. She acquired a love of reading at an early age which was fuelled by her father's occupation in the publishing industry. Barbara met George Bush when she was 16 years old at a 1941 Christmas dance and the couple became engaged 18 months later. Barbara attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts and George was educated at Yale and became a navy pilot. Barbara dropped out of college in her second year at college in 1944 and married George Bush on January 6, 1945 when she was 19 years old. The couple had six children, her daughter 'Robin, died in infancy. Barbara was an intelligent, witty, gregarious woman with a warm and relaxed manner which would eventually lead to her image as "everybody's grandmother". Barbara Bush supported her husband throughout his political career and had acquired the knowledge and experience of being a vice presidential candidate's wife by the time her husband was nominated for the presidency at the 1988 Republican Convention. In 1988 Barbara Bush was diagnosed with Grave's disease, an autoimmune disease of the thyroid, but this did not deter her from undertaking the arduous role of First Lady of America.
